Why am I being charged for using my own wireless network?

How's this network provider? Any story to share?

Why am I being charged for using my own wireless network?

Postby Godot on Sat May 10, 2008 8:04 am

Hi, I just wondered if this was me being stupid or if others have encountered the same issue. I have a 16gb iphone, unlocked and with a Virgin Mobile Pay as you go SIM card. I've had the phone for about 2 weeks after changing from an iPod Touch, which I loved so much it made sense to get an iPhone. I also use a wireless internet modem at home. I was connecting previously to the network with no issues with the touch and thought it would be the same with the iphone. Until I've just got my mobile bill! I seem to have been charged for connecting to the internet! There doesn't seem to be any point complaining to the phone company, because I have been connecting to the net, but as it was thru my wireless modem I thought it would be free like my ipod touch. Is this normal? Am I being stupid / naive??? Will I always get charged? Or have I done something wrong? How can I tell I'm connecting to the net via my phone company and not via my wireless modem? Any thoughts would be gratefully rcvd.

The iPhone has probably been automatically connecting to Virgin's GPRS/Edge network, whenever your wifi is unavailable, for which they would charge you! It's possible to turn off wifi, but for some reason not GPRS/Edge on your iPhone.

I think there is software available to turn off GPRS/Edge, but you would need your iPhone to be Jailbroken.
Is your iPhone jailbroken?

Here is the services app for the iPhone. Again this requires you iPhone to be jailbroken in order to install the app.
Ive read that even without you knowing the iPhone uses over 50kb of data a day!

Services.app for Iphone - Disable Edge, Turn ON/OFF bluetooth, WiFi and SSH

This Application is used for easy accessing to the different running services for the iphone such as Wifi, Bluetooth, EDGE, Calling, and SSH.

Currently the Application only supports turning on/off Edge, Bluetooth, Wifi, and OpenSSH.

Requirements
In order for this to all work, your system must have BSD Subsystem installed or at least the BSD/Unix tools grep, launchctl, sh/zsh/some shell, and ifconfig.

Installation
Install through Installer.app, how simple could it be, or to do it manually; copy the unzipped Services.app to /Applications and chmod 755 as usual.

Download Services.app

Cheers for the advice, I owe you one! My phone is jailbroken so I downloaded Boss Prefs and Services. I'm requesting that Edge is turned off and then going back in and it's saying that the Edge is still on, but I guess that only time and my next phone bill will show if its worked. Cheers again, you're a star!
